Those who slander the truth say, “The Bible says that Jesus will sit on the throne of David and reign forever. So, He does not need to do His ministry for 40 years,” using Isaiah 9:7. Let’s find out why their insistence is contrary to the teachings of the Bible.
1. The 40-year reign of David and the “eternal reign” are different subjects
Do you know what the “throne of David” that Jesus reigned on means? Do you know when Jesus reigned on the throne of David and how He reigned on it?
Jesus’ fulfilling the 40-year reign of David’s throne and His eternal reign are different subjects.
It is because He is prophesied to reign for 40 years when He comes as a baby, as a son, which means when He comes in the flesh.?It is not about His reign in spirit.
Jesus Christ is in very nature God?(Php 2:5).?So, He is God who reigns from eternity to eternity.
- Jer 10:10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King.
God, the eternal King, came to this earth in the flesh to save His people. Among the gospel works He did, He fulfilled the “throne of David the king of Israel,” according to the prophecies of many prophets?(Eze 34:1-24; Jer 23:1-5; Isa 9:6-7; Lk 1:30-33, etc.).?It was to fulfill the 40-year reign of King David by preaching on this earth for three years at His first coming and thirty-seven years at His second coming.
2. Christ must remain forever, so why did He have to die?
If the people, who wrongly argue against the matter of the 40-year reign of David, had lived in the time of Jesus and had heard that Christ would have to suffer and die, how would they have reacted?
They must have persecuted Jesus, saying, “Christ must remain forever, so how can You say that He has to die? Jesus, You are not Christ!”
In the time of Jesus’ first coming, when Jesus talked about His death, saying,
- Jn 12:32-33 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
The Jews criticized Him, saying, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’?”?(Jn 12:32-34).
They knew only the fact that Christ remains forever, but not the prophecy that He would be born in the flesh or the prophecy that He would come on the throne of David and be?baptized?at the age of thirty, or the prophecy that He would pass away. Not knowing any of these, they had an uncertain faith that they would be saved only if they believed.
Today, too, people insist on the same thing like the people 2000 years ago, because they know only the fact that Christ reigns forever, not knowing any prophecies about how Christ fulfills David’s throne and that He should come in the flesh. Therefore, it is a non-biblical insistence that “Jesus doesn’t need to do His ministry for 40 years because He will reign forever on the throne of David.”
