The Church of God claims that Christ Ahnsahnghong is Jesus who came a second time because He restored the Passover. However, the Worldwide Church of God, which was established by Herbert W. Armstrong in the late 1930s, keeps all the festivals of the Old Testament as well as the Passover. Therefore, if we follow the logic of the Church of God, Herbert W. Armstrong should be the Second Coming Jesus, not Ahnsahnghong.
6. Armstrong did not know the profound meaning of the Passover
The Second Coming Christ must reveal the profound meaning of the Passover, not only the date. In the old days when nobody was able to find the forgotten dream of King Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel showed the dream and also interpreted it. In the same way, the Second Coming Christ who reveals the hidden truth of the new covenant [the secret of the seven thunders] must show completely the hidden meaning in each truth. Christ Ahnsahnghong revealed all the profound meaning hidden in the Passover―blessings such as the forgiveness of sins, eternal life, protection from the disaster, and the fulfillment of the first commandment.
However, Armstrong knew no better than other people who already knew that the Passover is the day to commemorate the death of Christ and the emancipation from the slavery of sin. These are the facts known to all theologians, not only to Armstrong. The only difference between the theologians of the world and Armstrong is the date. And he even explained about that through the sunset theory. Through this, we cannot keep the Passover of the new covenant. The date is important, but what is more important is the promise given through the words of life contained in the Passover and our belief in that promise.
If a person does a certain action on the 14th day, not knowing the blessings promised in the Passover and without faith in the words of the blessings, it does not mean that he keeps the Passover completely, or receives the blessings promised in it. Only when we believe God’s words of life promised in the Passover and do in accordance with the words, we can say we keep the Passover completely. (Refer to Supplementary Explanation 3.) Now, through the truth of the Passover taught by Christ Ahnsahnghong, let’s find out how vain and meaningless are the claims of the opponents who use the teachings of Armstrong.
1) Are they sure of receiving the forgiveness of sins by partaking in the Passover ceremony?
Definitely, Armstrong and theologians of the world know at least the fact that the Passover is the day when we are freed from the slavery of sin, but nobody truly understands the nature of our sins and lets us know the true forgiveness of sins.
The blessing of the forgiveness of sin, which is contained in the Passover, is not simply the promise given for the sins that we committed after we were born on this earth.
The Bible testifies that our souls committed sins deserving of death sentence in heaven, and that we became sinners destined to go to hell (Pro 8:22-30; Job 38:1-4, 21; Lk 15:3-7; 19:10; Heb 11:13-16). Also, the Bible testifies that our grievous sins can be forgiven through the Passover of the new covenant established through Jesus’ sacrifice
on the cross (Eph 1:7; Mt 26:28). In other words, the Passover of the new covenant is the truth through which we can be forgiven of our sins deserving of the death sentence, which we committed in heaven. That’s why Jesus, who came to save sinners, eagerly desired to eat the Passover (Mt 9:13; Lk 22:15).
However, did Armstrong know all the secret of the forgiveness of sins? No!
Just like the Seventh-Day Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses, Armstrong claimed that the living body of man is the soul of man, and that there is no separate soul after death. How come that person can know that the Passover of the new covenant is the truth through which we can receive the complete forgiveness of sins?
Therefore, even though he found the date for the Passover, it is an incomplete Passover.
2) Are they sure that they can receive eternal life by partaking in the Passover ceremony?
Jesus promised that we can have eternal life through His flesh and blood, and also He promised that the Passover bread and wine is His flesh and blood (Jn 6:53-54; Mt 26:17-28). As the reality of the tree of life which gives eternal life to whoever eats it, Jesus gave us the Passover bread and wine.
However, does the church of Armstrong believe and obey all these words of eternal life? No. That’s why their Passover is just the shell without the blessing of eternal life.
The Bible testifies that the everlasting covenant―a sign promised to the spiritual David―is the truth giving us life (Isa 55:3), and that the one who swallows up death forever with aged wine in Zion, the city of our festival, is God [Spiritual Melchizedek] (Isa 25:6-9).
Therefore, Christ who comes a second time as spiritual David and spiritual Melchizedek will not just reveal the date of the Passover, but will restore the Passover as the truth granting the blessings of eternal life. However, Armstrong did not know that truth.
3) Are they sure that the Passover of the new covenant is the sign for us to escape the last disaster?
In the last days, when Jesus comes a second time, He grants the seal of God, through for us to escape disasters. In the time of the Exodus from Egypt, the blood of the Passover lamb became the sign for the Israelites to escape the disaster (Ex 12:11-13); and in the time of Hezekiah, by keeping the Passover they could be protected from the attack of the Assyrians. In the same way, in the New Testament times, the blood of Christ who is the reality of the Passover lamb is the sign which we can escape the last disaster (Rev 7:2-3). Namely, by keeping the Passover of the new covenant, we can escape the last disaster which occurs as the winds from the four corners of the earth are released. That’s why Rev 7:1-3 prophesies that God puts His seal before the last disaster.
However, does the church of Armstrong believe and obey this promise contained in the Passover of the new covenant? No! Therefore, their Passover has no meaning at all.
4) Are they sure that they can fulfill the first commandment by keeping the Passover of the new covenant?
God set the day of the Passover as the day to punish all other gods (Ex 12:12). And throughout history, the Israelites worshiped idols when they did not keep the Passover; and whenever they kept the Passover, they destroyed all other gods (2 Ch 30:1-5; 31:1; 2 Ki 23:1-25). These historical events show that the Passover is the truth through which we can fulfill the first commandment. That’s why Rev 18:1-4 prophesies that the Passover through which we can recognize the home for demons must be revealed in order to completely take God’s people out of Babylon, the home for demons. However, does the church of Armstrong believe and keep the Passover, realizing that they can fulfill the first commandment through the Passover? No! Armstrong did not even know that truth.
