This is what happened when I worked for one of high-speed rail related departments. On a summer day, I was having a hard time working in the office while struggling with the sweltering heat; we could not turn on the air conditioner because of the government’s energy policy.
In the afternoon, rain was falling in drops. I was glad to see the rain cooling down the summer heat even just a little bit, and I felt much better. While I was working pleasantly, my manager hurriedly came into the office after visiting the construction site. He was so agitated that he could hardly speak.
“He fell … hit his head … an ambulance came …”
Hearing him speak stutteringly, we were barely able to grasp the situation: When an electrician was working on a train’s electro-supplying contact wire at a bridge construction site, it started raining. So he tried to go down quickly to avoid the risk of an electric shock. As he was going down, he lost his footing and fell to the ground. His helmet came off when he fell, and he hit his head on the cement and was seriously injured.
Because of that accident, a heavy atmosphere engulfed the office as well as the construction site. However, the more I thought about the cause of the accident, the more curious I became about it. A construction site is one of the most dangerous workplaces, so construction workers must wear personal protective equipment although it feels inconvenient and cumbersome. It is necessary for them to wear safety helmets to protect their head as well as safety shoes and belts to keep them from falling. I heard that the electrician put on a full body safety harness when he worked on the construction site that day. Nevertheless, he had a big accident. So I was curious about why the accident occurred.
Later, when I found out the cause of the accident, I could not help but feel bitter. That day, the electrician wore a safety helmet but did not fasten the chin strap on it; and he wore a safety belt but did not buckle it up. A moment’s carelessness caused such a terrible accident.
Through the accident, I came to examine myself to see if I was following the regulations of my personal spiritual safety. Following the safety regulations to protect our souls is putting on the full armor of God. We should buckle the belt of truth around our waists, wear the breastplate of righteousness, fit our feet with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, take up the shield of faith, and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. By doing this, we must protect our individual souls from the devil’s schemes.
Studying the Word, praying continually, and preaching the gospel and so on—doing all these things is the way to put on the full armor of God. Although I knew this well, I used to neglect to do it. There were many times when I read the words of God carelessly and prayed out of habit. As I thought that I might lose the life of my spirit while being complacent in my faith, I was suddenly seized with fear.
Each and every word given by God is a safety device for my soul. If I neglect it, I will suffer an irrevocable fatal wound in my soul. To avoid this, I will strictly follow all the safety regulations for my soul.
